2009 – 2012

Prior to starting the Business Alliance of North Carolina, Melanie Paul performed work with entrepreneurs and small business owners to assist them with their bookkeeping and accounting needs.  As years and years of data were entered for entrepreneurs and business owners who had fallen behind on filing their taxes, much was learned through pulling together the whole financial picture.  This data was not only used in assisting them with their annual business and personal taxes and working with the IRS, Department of Revenue and Employment Security Commission on back taxes, but with coming up with a road map to assist them in achieving the financial freedom and life that they had envisioned when they started their business!

As Melanie combed through their numbers, expenses were reviewed and connections were made with other businesses who provided exceptional quality and customer service for the same expenses the business owners were already paying for.  This not only reduced their expenses, but increased their income as referral relationships were formed.  The process of growing a business through analyzing their numbers, providing a financial road map with measurable outcomes and building a referral network was born!

2012 – 2013

Melanie became a powerful networker and connector, working with multiple Chambers and networking groups.  She was asked in 2012 to become a director of a local Chamber of Commerce to grow it’s membership and bring attention to a much needed rural community.  Within a year, attendance at events grew with business owners coming from within 50 miles every week to the Chamber’s meetings and events!  Online stats went through the roof with the Chamber’s website receiving over 45,000 hits a month!  Calls were coming in from different States with individuals researching a move to and doing business in a local, rural town just east of Raleigh!

The idea came of creating a “Business Alliance” –  a collaboration of several different Chambers working together for the benefit of it’s members!  Resistance to this idea grew in the small town.  As Melanie left the Chamber, she was contacted by members interested in re-birthing the Business Alliance idea into it’s own identity.  In April, 2013, the Business Alliance of North Carolina opened it’s doors!

2013 was a very pivotal year for the Business Alliance!   Stress had taken a toll on Melanie after leaving the non-profit world as a CFO and diving into owning and operating her own business.  She had originally entered the business world as a technician – someone who has skills in a certain area; however, she did not have any experience in owning and operating an actual business – from the ground up.  She quickly learned and grew a very successful bookkeeping business; however, through all the ups and downs and learning curves, she was not bringing in the income she once did as an employee to support her families lifestyle.  After spending the first few years living off savings and student loans to survive and run the business, the news came.  A sale date had been put on her home.

After running the Business Alliance for a few months,  she found herself in a position that did not fit the Spirit of The Business Alliance.  Rather than talking to individuals about membership in the Business Alliance because of the resources  and connections that could assist them in growing their business, she found herself thinking about her personal and family responsibilities .  Melanie decided to take the “responsible” road and apply for a “job,” allowing her to honor the gift that Spirit had given her, and to begin building a strong and sustainable Foundation for the Business Alliance.

A job offer came in – yeah!!!  It was from an organization that was very similar to The Business Alliance model; however.  The money was GREAT and would save her home; however, she would not be able to grow the Business Alliance while working that particular job.  She received notice that a sale date on her home was 5 days away.  She had filed a loan modification during the prior month – as a last resort; however, 5 prior loan modifications had not been accepted.  She decided to take the responsible path and accept the position.

As she called the company, Spirit came over her saying that all would be OK and to trust.  She had been given gifts and talents to assist others in growing their business through analyzing their finances, creating a financial road map and connecting them with others.  She had put in the 10,000+ hours to be qualified and the idea had been given to her – from Spirit.  She called and turned down the offer – and drove around for hours afraid to go home and tell her family what she had done.  She finally gave into the fact that in 5 days, she and her family would be homeless.  

When she arrived home, a package had arrived from her mortgage lender.  She had been approved for the loan modification.  She knew this was a gift from God and that she was to follow through with what had been given to her – The Business Alliance of North Carolina.

Wanting to focus on building the Foundation of the Business Alliance and knowing from experience the time and funding that is involved in that goal, Melanie asked God for a supplemental form of income that would allow her family to survive while she worked on the building a strong, sustainable Foundation.  The next day, she received a call from North Carolina State University about a position that had been vacant for over a year.

Melanie began working at NCSU in October, 2013 with the intent on rebuilding her financial position while growing the Foundation for the Business Alliance.  The dual focus was not easy; however, blinders were put on and she remained focused.  The Foundation was built – and tweaked . . . and tweaked.

Over a 3 year period, the Foundation became stronger and she began to dig out of the financial hole she was in when the Business Alliance was first started.  There comes a point in time where comfort sets in.  That was in November, 2015.  Financially, things were going very well and it was time to take the leap back into the Business Alliance; however, fear of the unknown and losing the financial freedom that had been created began to set in.  Additional funds were committed to the Business Alliance to continue building it’s Foundation.  

What happens when Spirit calls upon you and gives you a vision so clear that utilizes your gifts and talents to the greater good of mankind – and you drag your feet and ignore it?  Stress and sickness begin to creep in.  For a period of close to 1-year, the stress became almost unbearable and during the last few months, Melanie was in and out of the hospital, doctors offices and Urgent Care with aches, pains and on 2 occasions, hemorrhaging.  It became hard to concentrate and focus.  Fear set in around leaving her comfort zone.

Asking for guidance, business relationships with strong, genuine companies and individuals began to surface and crystalize.  The dream came alive again – and crystal clear!  She realized it was time to jump, to trust – and that everything would be OK!  The Foundation had been built!  A strong process had been put in place to bring assistance and resources to entrepreneurs and business owners!  It was time to roll up her sleeves and get to work!

She gave notice to NCSU in mid-October with an end date of December 31, 2016!

2017 is another year of transformation for the Business Alliance!  Several programs have been launched and are providing business owners with the resources and assistance they need to grow a strong sustainable business!

The 2 core programs that have been launched are:

The Financial Fitness Program.  A 10-week course taking individuals and business owners through eliminating debt and building a stream of income through your business to live the life that you envisioned when you started your business!  The Financial Fitness Program is the only program that covers the defense, the offense, and the playing field of personal finance.  

As you go through the program, you see your financial picture through a different lens and you are able to make financial decisions that allow you to get out of the financial matrix and build a strong, sustainable form of income!  There are 3 classes offered every 10-weeks.  A night class, an afternoon class and an online class.

The Business Builder Program.  A 12-month program with business owners working together collaboratively to build each others businesses through a Personal and Professional Development Program (using 9 books and programs throughout the year), Weekly Think Tanks, and Monthly Masterminds.

You build your referral network while going through the program and work with a mentor and accountability partner, progressing through the program with set goals and objectives, measurable outcomes and celebrations as targets are hit!

As members need help on their business, they can set up an appointment for a one-on-one business consultation to go over areas of concerns, receive recommendations and connections that are in line with their next step in business growth!

The health concerns that Melanie experienced at the end of 2016, prior to taking the leap back into the Business Alliance . . . all are gone!  All aches and pains disappeared within days of taking the leap to follow her passion of assisting others in the growth of their business!
